My name is Sydney, and I’m a birth doula. I've been a doula since June of 2020, and work both privately and in a freestanding birth center. I love the outdoors, and you can often find me hiking, road biking, or rock climbing. I also play guitar, read birth books (and novels!), volunteer in the Rose Medical Center NICU, and am a high school student! I found my love and passion for supporting families and children in 2002 when I began my career as a Nanny.  I would frequently found myself supporting newborns/infants as a Nanny and chose to transition to a Newborn Care Specialist officially in 2021.  As of 2023, I have supported over 30 families with their childcare and newborn development. In order to bolster my experience and skills, I sought educational opportunities that specialized in newborn/infant care.  I have completed course offerings from Newborn Care Solutions in both Foundational and Advanced levels and am an Elite, CACHE certified NCS; along with being a trained doula and working on my certification for lactation counselor, I continue learning and growing my knowledge through safe sleep courses and many other trainings pertaining to newborns. My name is Lyssa Zawalski, and I am a postpartum doula undergoing certification with DONA. My path towards becoming a postpartum doula was a winding one, with stops along the way as a teacher, social worker, and product manager. While I have found a depth to each of these titles, becoming a postpartum doula has felt like so much more. Quickly after giving birth to my daughter, I realized that I was underprepared and undereducated on what came next. Postpartum was filled with navigating solo parenting, PMADs (perinatal mood and anxiety disorders), and lack of a “village.” Once enough time had passed and I could more objectively look back at my postpartum period, the most glaring observation was that I had desperately needed help. I needed support in understanding how to feed my baby, what infant sleep looked like, how to find ways to take care of myself (which felt impossible at times). Having a postpartum doula would have changed my postpartum experience as well as the early years of parenthood. I cannot imagine a more tender time to support a family. I truly believe the care and support that we receive in our postpartum period determines so much of how we start our parenting journeys.
