I am a Medicaid Provider and a Tricare provider! I spent 12 years as a birth assistant, lactation consultant, and CBE trainer in The Bradley Method and Birthing From Within, and ran LaLeche League meetings with a passion for supporting women who have become Moms. Currently, I'm a Certified Birth Doula for all births regardless of where and how you deliver. I'm also a Bereavement Doula® helping families struggling with grief and loss, as well as an Adoption & Surrogacy Doula and Certified Lactation Educator. In addition to my Doula training, I have 32+ years in the trenches on my own journey as a Mama - parenting since 1992 - and am Mom Of 18 (yes - 18 kids!). I’ve experienced infertility up to IVF, 7 pregnancies, and 3 miscarriages - one of which was twins at 16 weeks, as well as 1 hospital birth and 3 home births with midwives - two of which were water births. I breastfed 7 children, including 3 of my adopted babies, for 11 years breastfeeding in total, relactating for 2 of those adopted babies. I have a huge blended family and have suffered the loss of an adult son.

I offer holistic pregnancy, birth, and postpartum doula support rooted in the belief that the entrance to motherhood is a sacred and physiological rite of passage. Prenatal, Birth, or Postpartum- wherever you are in your journey, I offer emotional and physical comfort, as well as educational resources, nutritional/herbal guidance, partner coaching, advocacy methods, and hands-on labor support. The little things that have big impacts are often overlooked. I emphasize the importance of understanding physiological systems within and connecting with our bodies to have an optimal experience and entrance into new parenthood. What we experience can sometimes be unpredictable and our world has built a system that has created such disconnect in the most transformative life event! My calling to this work is to bring that connection and empowerment back to you and offer a grounding energy to your space. You were made to do this!

I am a Certified VBAC Doula, trained to serve as a birth and postpartum doula, and offer bereavement doula services for those experiencing pregnancy or infant loss. A successful VBA2C using Hypnobabies in 2011 ignited my enduring passion for supporting and achieving optimal birthing experiences and sharing information about pregnancy and birth to advocate for better perinatal and newborn health outcomes. I’m the owner of Atala Doula Services, serving the Sacramento region and surrounding counties of northern California. Having spent most of my adult working life as a technical writer, which involves gathering information from subject matter experts and creating written resources that even non-technical people can easily understand and follow, I realized the work was not as rewarding or fulfilling as I wish it would be. So, I embarked on some introspection to evaluate my personality, my strengths, what I enjoyed about my prior work, and what I most want to do in the future…be a source of support and empowerment for others.

I spent the first six years of my career working in early childhood education. First working in a daycare, then moving onto preschool, and later working as a nanny. My time in early childhood gave me a great appreciation of mothers, children, and families. I found it incredibly rewarding to be welcomed into someone’s home and life to care for their most precious possession. As I worked in early childhood I simultaneously took certifications in my other passion, fitness. I began to learn about anatomy and how different perinatal bodies are to women who have not given birth. One of my trainings stated that 80% of women will be pregnant (and eventually postpartum) at some point in their lives. This special consideration stuck with me. It wasn’t until my husband and I decided to try for children that I fully understood the wonder of fertility, pregnancy, and birth. I became obsessed with devouring all the information I could on these topics and finally stumbled upon Ina May’s guide to childbirth. This book completely changed how I viewed birth and melted my fears of childbirth away. However, by the time I became pregnant navigating the often confusing OB and even midwifery world left me feeling dizzy. The entire process left me feeling disempowered and I knew I couldn’t go into giving birth from this space. This pushed me to train to be a birth doula to ensure I would have a positive pregnancy and birth experience. The training helped me to understand physiological birth, navigating the medical world, and what I wanted even in the event of an unplanned obstacle. I finally felt confident I could handle whatever labor could throw at me. My passion for birth was born out of necessity and I plan to use that same level of devotion to help other women. I truly believe my unique skill set and experiences have lead me to the field of birth work. I created Fit to Birth to combine all my knowledge and passions. I hope to provide resources, education, and support to pregnant women in Sacramento and beyond.

In 2005, I was certified as a doula through Loving Arms Doula Services of Eureka, Ca. in conjunction with a grant through Shasta First Five. Birthing From Within was a very integral part of their philosophy and has continued to be a part of mine as well. I had the opportunity to support the underserved population in my county, empowering new young mothers to birth themselves as much as the life growing within them. As a bodyworker, my training in Perinatal massage, Craniosacral therapy and Somatoemotional release has been a lovely fusion with my doula and birth mentor training of wholistic empowering care for birthing individuals that I have had the honor to support along the way. As a sound healing practitioner, self awareness through the voice and sound is incorporated into my support offerings as well. I have brought all this into my birth journey workshops for the perinatal year. My goals as a mentor is to support by staying present, heart centered and explore the boundless possibilities that come with the journey of birth.
