I became a Certified Lactation Counselor in 2018, completed the Clinical and Communication Lactation Specialist training in 2021, and then passed the International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant exam in 2023. I'm certified as a birth and postpartum doula by Lifespan Doulas. Love for my own family and my community has led me to focus on health education, promoting awareness of human lactation, and assisting in extending breastfeeding duration and exclusivity for the families I serve. I am passionate about accessible lactation care and enthusiastic about health and wellness promotion and youth development. My goal is simply to aid others in being healthy and keeping their family healthy. My expertise is in maternal and child health, emphasizing a positive breastfeeding experience and an active family lifestyle. I love to support parents in reaching their breastfeeding goals and guiding them when life circumstances limit their breastfeeding goals. The combination of these values led me to launch Lactation Lighthouse.

Because of my unique blend of training and experience in both counseling and doula work, I am a good choice as a doula for anyone who would appreciate the extra depths I can go to in our prenatal and postpartum visits, as well as during your birth! In addition to the transformative and emotional side of birth, I also have done extended study in spinning babies, what different labor patterns mean, and what positions help in different situations. My toolbox includes all the standard “comfort measures” most doulas use for labor as well as a lot of “outside the box” ways to cope that I have learned from my extensive reading.
Ann Arbor, Michigan
Hi I am Maria, and I came to doula work after working in childcare for 8 years. After spending time with parents who had relatively no postpartum care or support, I soon started my training to bridge that gap. I believe that the postpartum period is one of the most crucial stages of pregnancy. Many parents experience feelings of loneliness, confusion, and exhaustion and it is Maria’s top priority to help parents feel their best during your fourth trimester. Maria believes that every family who wants a doula should have one. Promoting a judgement free zone, she happily works with families and individuals of any age, race, & gender. Instilling confidence and nurturing a new family is what makes Maria excited to go to work every day. Maria has been trained as an EMT, birth and postpartum doula, certified lactation counselor, and is working on her IBCLC certification which she plans to finish by winter 2025.

I am a passionate birth doula who is dedicated to helping mothers feel heard and in control of their pregnancy and birth by finding trust, strength, and empowerment through listening to the intuition we all have as mothers. My personal experiences of having a C-section, a miscarriage, and a VBAC have all encouraged me to help educate and support other women throughout their own journeys. My goal is for mother and partner to feel supported through prenatal education and confident in trusting their combined intuition to make the best decisions for their family in this life changing moment.

The dream is to empower YOU to advocate for YOURSELF. No one knows your body like you do. No one knows your baby like you do. I do the work, the research so that you go into birth fully prepared to make the birth you crave, happen! I also so fully believe that everyone, and I mean everyone… deserves this. So if we need to talk about pricing and/or a payment plan to make it happen. Please please bring that up. I’m a doula on the team at Great Lakes Doulas.

We so often are in search of magic, without realizing we have it right inside of ourselves. For me, becoming a mother has proven that to be true. Birthing Ancestors was created from the idea that when you have a child you are not only birthing a future generation, but you are also birthing yourself as a parent - someone’s ancestor. It is my greatest honor to holistically support you throughout every stage of your childbearing journey, and help you to discover the magic that has always been inside of you. Since becoming a certified Full Spectrum Doula in 2021, I have fallen deeply in love with this work. I have expanded my knowledge to support clients from fertility/preconception planning thru postpartum, with special interests in herbal and nutritional support. I also have 200hr yoga teacher certification giving me knowledge in anatomy, stretching and strengthening muscles, relaxation techniques, and preparing the body for labor.

As a dedicated and supportive mother, my goal is to help you take a step back and truly take hold of each moment of your labor. I believe in empowering you to make the choices that feel right for you as your birth journey unfolds. Your birth story should be a beautiful reflection of your experience and the role you play. I live by a simple yet profound motto: “The mother deserves to be cherished and celebrated, the baby deserves to be embraced and revered, and the space around them is sacred and should be honored.” Together, let's create an atmosphere that nurtures all of this. I am a birth doula who equally specializes in all birth outcomes. I delivered my son who was incomparable with life and it opened my eyes to the need of bereavement doulas. Hold and honor your babies.
Livonia, Michigan
Peace! My name is Shekita and I CAAPA Trained Community Based Birth Doula registered with the State of Michigan’s Doula Initiative. As a Trauma Informed Practitioner, in my experience, birth is transformative and often traumatic, even if it all goes according to plan. How could it not be when the birther literally splits their body into two distinct parts in a matter of hours? Trauma can result when a person fears for their life or the life of someone close to them and for many other reasons. In birth, we’re necessarily close to death because we approach the veil between worlds in order to welcome a new soul into this world. When I serve in this way, I can approach processing birth from a trauma-informed perspective. Trauma-informed means you go slow and acknowledge it takes time to process and integrate. I will be your guide. I am a plant based mommy of three and I love cooking, exploring nature and my city (Detroit) and thrifting in my spare time!
