Hello! I’m Gabrielle. A little bit about me and what sets me apart: I am an Ayurvedic birth and postpartum doula, an Holistic Pregnancy and Birth Practitioner (HPBP), and I am in my final year of a Master of Science degree in Integrative Medicine and Ayurveda Health. And, aside from all of that, I have been a career nanny for over a decade with experience working with moms and postpartum. My knowledge of this ancient wisdom of Ayurveda allows me to bring a unique approach to your postpartum by focusing on nourishment, healing, rest, + bonding. My focus is to hold you so you can hold your baby. As we enter into this sacred journey together, know that my intention during every stage is done with the utmost reverence and respect for the art of bringing new life into the world, and I am merely a bystander in your new journey to motherhood. I am a mother to a 5 year old and have loved children since I was a child myself. I have always been someone who enjoys helping people. I started on the path towards nursing, earning my Associate’s degree in Fall of 2022. After mostly completing my degree in summer of 2022, I realized my personality wouldn't shine in nursing. I am more empathetic and personable, which lead me to becoming a doula. I started with birth doula in August and it opened my eyes to my passion for birthwork. Shortly after, I took the postpartum doula workshop. That led me to also taking infant CPR, and earning a certified lactation support counselor as well. I am looking forward to sitting for the Lamaze CBE exam Fall of 2023. I have worked with families both prior to these certifications and currently and I can’t wait to explore and learn more

I am Joan Sherwood, founder of Peaceful Beginnings To You. My calling to become a doula was born from a personal experience. During the birth of my child, I was left alone in a hospital room without any support. My spouse and brother were sent home because I was not in active labor. My water had broken, so I was admitted, and I faced the daunting process of labor alone, in a secluded area until it was time to push. This experience, where I delivered a 9 -pound, 2-ounce baby without my loved one's present, ignited my passion to ensure that no other person would have to endure such solitude. My journey as a doula began 25 years ago when I assisted a family member through labor. Since then, I have been a source of support and guidance for family and friends, which eventually led me to pursue certification as a birth doula through DONA International. I am deeply committed to holistic birth and postpartum care, and my extensive training reflects this dedication. My education includes a Family Development Credential, studies at the Institute of Integrative Nutrition, the Center for Homeopathic Education, and the Swedish Institute College of Health Sciences. I am also a certified Calm Birth Instructor, Infant Massage Instructor Trainer, Womb Sauna Practitioner, and have received postpartum training from Indigemama, BirthMama, Traditional Postpartum Practitioner, and Birth Arts International. My approach to doula care is centered on the needs of the laboring person. I come with no preconceived notions, and I remain as fluid and flexible as possible to meet the evolving needs of each individual. In addition, to running my private doula practice, I have provided doula care to underserved communities as a doula and doula mentor for a federally funded program in Brooklyn.

I usually say I accidentally fell into the field of birth work, but I guess that's not totally true. After spending a decade abroad running a foster home/cardiac surgery program for babies with complex congenital heart defects and maternal/fetal health programs for at-risk indigenous families, I unexpectedly found myself stuck in New York City in early 2020, waiting out this little bug called "Covid-19" that was shutting borders all around the world... I certified as a birth & postpartum doula in the USA in 2020, to be with my best friend for the birth of her first child in the midst of Covid protocols. I never could have imagined how much I would fall in love with birthwork here in the United States and it is the greatest honor to walk alongside families as they grow and change (in whatever capacity!), providing unbiased & judgment-free support, advocacy, guidance, and care during such intimate and pivotal moments.

My best friend asked me to be "her doula" 17 years ago. I flew to LA and planned to be there for 10 days in hopes the baby would come in that window of time. I sang and whispered into her belly and Introduced myself to her baby. We had quite a time during the labor as her midwives guided her through the experience. She was incredible! She chose a home birth which ended at the hospital. She gave birth to a healthy baby boy. Witnessing the birth was transcendent and inspiring! When I flew back to NYC, I vowed that when our youngest daughter was in college, I would become a Doula. I grew up in Minnesota. I graduated with a BFA from the acting program at the University of North Carolina School of the Performing Arts. I have a background in dance, singing, yoga and martial arts. I was an American Council of Exercise certified personal trainer for 12 years. When I became pregnant, becoming a certified prenatal trainer was ideal. I especially loved working with all my pregnant clients. Having an online health and wellness business with Arbonne International has been another passion of mine. Over the years, I have coached a team on how to build their own online businesses and shared this opportunity in a public speaking setting for large groups. I teach my clients the benefits of aligning with a vegan brand they can trust and the value of choosing a B corporation, and living a more green lifestyle. I am a certified Birth Doula and Postpartum Doula with the International Doula Institute. I am also certified as a Perinatal Nutrition Educator, Birth Educator and Lactation Counselor. I hold a certification in Diversity Equity and Inclusion. I am also first aid, AED/CPR certified for pediatric and adults through the Red cross. Being present, and relying on my emotional intelligence, knowledge and discernment, helps me to navigate how to best listen and anticipate a person's needs. I embody joyful humor as my way to serve others. I bring warm energy, passion and authenticity to the people I spend time with. I'm a lifelong student who loves to learn, grow and collaborate. I believe these qualities, as a birth team member, contribute to the overall outcome and experience of all involved. I live in Harlem with my husband. We have two daughters. Hobbies: singing in choir, biking, and lifting weights. I also enjoy baking, reading and traveling. I love conversations over dinner with my husband and friends, and going to the theater and jazz clubs. Walking in nature each day is key to living in my joy, and of course, fitting as many plants and flowers into our home as humanly possible!

My experience as a Doula dates back to when I supported family and friends, unknowingly providing post-partum and supportive care. I've worked in the healthcare field for 15 (+) years at various hospitals & clinics, specifically in women's reproductive health. Having worked in both the private & public sectors of healthcare, I realized I wanted to not only support but advocate for those who could not speak out for themselves, all while being a source to women that needed resources. I didn't realize that all of this would bring me full circle to my purpose of becoming a doula! I've worked with women and families, providing evidence-based support for labor, post-partum, mental, & spiritual needs. During the 4th trimester (postpartum) Not only will I support and offer education as to what to expect for yourself during this physically and emotional time but I will also help you understand your newborn developments and milestones. No pregnancy or postpartum is ever the same; I encounter each one with an open mind & and heart, giving you the support that I know will put your mind at ease.

“I found my birth doula on Bornbir. After submitting my needs, I was able to connect with several awesome doulas that are within a local distance from me.”
