About me

Hey there! I'm Sarah of Aunt Sarah Doula Services, I serve families throughout Northeast Ohio. My philosophy is inclusive, non-judgmental, and evidence based care. I will support whatever choices work for you and your family, no matter what you decide regarding pain management, birth location, cultural birth traditions, feeding, etc. I am here for it all! I believe that everyone deserves a doula and even if you think you can't afford one, I will make it happen. I would love to provide endless support (and hopefully cookies) to guide you through the birth of your child.

Service introduction

I offer birth and postpartum doula services. I help the birthing person prepare for labor and the birth of their child, and provide postpartum support as well. Most of my work is done in the prenatal prep phases (expectations, birth planning, etc) and through continuous support during labor and delivery (birth positions, comfort measures, distraction techniques, etc). I am available to answer your questions, but also give you helpful referrals and resources

What is a doula?

A doula is a birthing professional that provides continuous labor support throughout childbirth. We will not leave your side during labor! Doulas don't perform any medical procedures, but we do provide physical and emotional support. The goal is to provide an easier and more positive birth experience through information, breathing, massage and other comfort measures. Doulas are an impartial factor to help see through the cloud of emotions involved in birth. We help birthing people feel empowered with information as they make decisions throughout the process. Medical staff can be intimidating and super brief when when they enter the room. A doula can help slow things down by reminding the birther that they may have had questions. Oh! And doulas are there to support the decisions of the birther, we give information not opinions.

Does a doula take the place of my partner?

No, doulas don't replace the birthing partner. A doula will work in tandem with your partner. If you don't have a birth partner, a doula is a great option. Doulas are a valuable and knowledgeable asset to add to your support team. We help both the birther and their partner get through the birth experience. Doulas and partners work together to support the birthing person. Having another team member also allows the partner to take breaks (eating, napping, showering) so they can feel refreshed to continue. Childbirth is a marathon not a sprint.

Why do I need a doula? Won't the nurse and my birth partner be enough?

You can definitely get through birth without a doula, people have been doing it for ages. What a lot people don't realize is that the nurse is not in the room for most of the labor. They come in for 5-10 minutes at a time here and there to check your vitals, but that's it especially during the early parts of labor. Your partner may not be familiar with what is happening to you. They may be scared to see you in pain. Having a doula means having someone in the room who has been through birth and is familiar with what is going on during the birth process. The doula will provide continuous care, I help you get through contractions with massage and other distraction techniques. I will not leave your side until after your baby is born and snuggling in your arms.
