Donna Sarna obtained her Bachelor in Medical Rehabilitation in Physiotherapy from the University of Manitoba, graduating in 1992. Her career began in private practice focusing on the areas of orthopedics and sports injury. Early on in her career, she was privileged to have the opportunity to work with a team of health care practitioners in a multi-disciplinary organization, specializing in chronic pain. This experience inspired a change in her philosophy as she learned the importance of looking at an individual as a whole, and that optimal health involves not only the body, but also the mind and the connection between the two. In 2000, she began her own practice to support this change in philosophy, which made a holistic approach in the care of her clients possible. She combined this endeavor with the pursuit of her Masters degree in Science in Medical Rehabilitation which she completed in 2005. In 2002, Donna pursued Stott Pilates training, which she incorporates into her daily practice. Donna along with her partner and fellow physio, Jaime, developed a special population Pilates class for Cancer Rehabilitation, which continues on today with the help of corporate and community sponsorship. Concurrently in 2002, Donna began extensive training in the treatment of pelvic floor pain and dysfunction and continues, 17 years later, to be a strong advocate of promoting education to the public in the area of pelvic floor health and wellness as well as in women’s health in general. She brings her holistic approach to the area of pelvic floor rehabilitation, connecting the pelvic floor with the lumbopelvic girdle and addressing any imbalances in the system to optimize the physical and functional recovery of the body as a whole. She has completed extensive training in pelvic floor therapy in both Canada and the US as well as attended multiple international symposiums with healthcare professionals from all over the world. Her training also encompasses the treatment of prostate, gyneoncological and breast cancer, working to maximize rehabilitation potential. She is qualified to perform internal pelvic floor assessments for dysfunction related to incontinence, pelvic floor organ prolapse, anorectal dysfunction and/or pain conditions for both women and men. She is also qualified to treat the pediatric population in this area. Donna also provides prenatal and post-partum assessment, education and treatment to optimize the health of new moms in the areas of pelvic floor, core and breast health. Donna’s extensive post graduate training also includes acupuncture, mobilization of the nervous system, joint mobilization, and exercise prescription including courses on addressing movement dysfunction and imbalances, hypopressive techniques as well as techniques geared towards release of the soft tissue. She has also completed advanced training in the areas of myofascial release, visceral mobilization and craniosacral therapy which she incorporates into her daily practice. Donna’s philosophy and approach to her practice is that you can never have too many tools in your toolbox as every client is unique. She is a “hands on therapist” and continues to treat a wide variety of clients with pelvic floor dysfunction, orthopaedic conditions, sports injuries, as well as chronic pain. Donna is a frequent presenter on women’s health to the public as well as to health care professionals. She along with Jaime have also developed a course for physiotherapists on the orthopedic role of the pelvic floor. They are also currently involved in developing a post-partum garment and exercise program to help women that are experiencing abdominal separation restore their core. On her own time, Donna enjoys Pilates, long walks in the woods with her family and kayaking.

Since becoming a mom and experiencing some of the challenges that come with that, I’ve known that I want to work with new parents and help them transition into parenthood smoothly. I believe whole heartedly that you are the right parents for your baby, and that you have the ability to make decisions that are best for them. My role is to provide you with un-biased information and resources to help you make confident decisions for your family. I am there to support you and help you build the skills and confidence you need to care for your child independently.
