Hello, I am Donna Bruschi, and I'm an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) located in Highland, NY. Breastfeeding has been an important part of my life since my first baby! I meet you where you are with breastfeeding and I help you achieve your goals with education and empathy. My goal is reducing anxiety, helping everybody get more sleep. Frequently asked questions
How often a day should I nurse my baby?
Human babies, like most humans, eat and drink just about every hour of the day. Newborns should be fed 10-16 times every 24 hours until they are predictably gaining weight. For some babies this is two weeks and for others, it's two months. Frequent feeding means less pressure to perform well at every feed. It is ideal for learning any new skill.
Formula companies (whose primary goal is for you to fail at breastfeeding) promote the idea of breastfeeding every three hours. This idea is conveyed to your hospital and pediatric providers who pass it on to you.
Yes, some well-fed babies of abundant moms are happy to wait three hours. Most are not. Find out how frequent feeding helps you connect and bond with your baby.
When should I break down and ask for help?
Why should you have to suffer?
If you don't know how to do something, it's perfectly acceptable to take a class or hire a coach to learn any new skill. I am guessing that you have done this for many of the skills you currently enjoy.
We live in a bottle feeding culture. Instead of spending your whole life learning how to breastfeed, you now need to squeeze it into a few short days, weeks or months. Ooof.

Do I need to take a breastfeeding class?
It is so helpful to learn some basics while you are expecting. After you have your baby, everything happens so quickly, that many new parents get overwhelmed and just quit breastfeeding.
We live in a bottle feeding culture. Breastfeeding is natural, but it can be so hard to figure out. Mother and baby are programmed with an internal drive and primitive reflexes AND it takes time and knowledge to learn to work together. You and your baby meet and suddenly you realize you don't know what you need to know!
Breastfeeding classes are ideal for learning the steps you are going to go through with your new baby.
I stopped nursing my baby. Is it too late to try again?
If your baby is under two months, and you have been pumping, there is a good chance you will be able to breastfeed again. It takes some coaching and some time, but the odds are in your favor.

I had breast reduction surgery. Can I breastfeed?
Yes! The real question is can you exclusively breastfeed? Maybe. You can definitely breastfeed and you may make enough milk but depending on your surgery, you may have had too much tissue removed. You can alway combine supplementing your baby with donor milk or formula while you breastfeed.

Why does breastfeeding hurt?
We have learned that at least since the dawn of written history, sore nipples are common in about 80% of new mothers. This soreness peaks on day three and is mostly resolved by day five. About 20% of those mothers will have persisting soreness after day three which can be attributed to poor positioning and immediately resolved with good positioning. About 5-10% of mothers have persisting soreness due to asymmetry in their baby's head, neck or body, a tongue and/or lip tie, or to small mouth/large nipple mismatch. These moms can be helped with bodywork, surgery and baby growing.
I personally experienced sore, cracked and bleeding nipples. I've focused on helping moms improve this for 30 years.
